The journey toward the center takes place within your own mind.

Perform every action artfully.

Take a walk to reconnect with the natural world.

When you drop the story you hide behind, you will find that everything is fresh and new, as if you were seeing everything for the first time, as it really is.

Hatred never ceases through hatred; by love alone it is healed.

Turn a bad habit into a meditation. Pay close attention to your every move. Notice how your body feels. Whenever your mind drifts off, bring it back to the experience. Do not try to stop or change this habit; go through the motions as usual, but do so with full awareness. Indulge in your habit with this high level of awareness over and over again. See how your attitude and feelings change.

Try to maintain the posture of zazen, letting go of thoughts. Open the hand of thought, which will try to grasp something, but refrain from grasping.

Pay attention to the taste, smell, and texture of every bite for an entire meal.

Discover the eternal within yourself.

Breath cuts through thinking, because you have to let go in order to breathe.

Realize that everyone is doing the best they possibly can. Judge no one.

Treat all beings with respect.

Some people take refuge in TV to evade the real issues in their lives. They cannot turn it off, because when they do, they have to go back to themselves, which is uncomfortable. They avoid the program running inside: confusion, conflict, and despair. They are turning away from suffering rather than dealing with the issues that really matter.

See the world as a dream. Enjoy its newness, its surprises, its beauty. Don’t cling to anything.

Place a blank canvas in front of you, sit quietly until moved to action, then paint, guided by your soul.

Be mindful of everything you think, and learn to change your thoughts from unwholesome to wholesome.

When reading, be aware of reading.

Give thanks throughout the day. Be thankful for every blessing you receive. Say “thank you” with grace.

Each time you arrive at a destination, give thanks.

Picture yourself as a piece of bamboo, completely hollow and empty inside—just space. Suddenly, energy will start pouring into you. Become hollow again. You do not need to do anything else. The bamboo will disappear when the time has come.

Don’t worry if you forget a dazzling solution or plan that arises during meditation—it will come up again.

Make a list of all that you have received today, even the smallest things. Then make a list of any pain you may have caused today. This activity reverses your usual thinking: We tend to think that we give all day and get very little, and that we are the ones who get hurt and disappointed, rather than the ones causing the hurt or disappointment.

Draw upon the colors indigo and violet to renew your dedication to a spiritual path, shedding your personal needs and wants in favor of universal peace.

Practice eating mindfully, driving mindfully, even taking out the garbage mindfully.

Allow your eyes to relax and focus on nothing while maintaining a general awareness of everything.
